I’m shifting away from writing about pop culture, “fluff” pieces, and listicles. While all of those are super fun and all, I love sitting down with my computer and letting it all flow out of me. Now, wait — I should plan these?? Yes, I’ve written down some points that I want to talk about in this article. It’s important to plan, outline, and package a piece before it even goes live. If you want to read more about blogging, I 10/10 recommend readin’ The Swirl blog. They’re absolutely amazing college bloggers and have a whole page dedicated to blogging. But put away the promo of other blogs, and let’s get back:

 

What do I mean by self-love?

Simple. As long as you wake up in the morning and smile at yourself in the mirror, you’re practicing self-love. A smile goes a long way. I am the queen of beating myself up. In a weird and twisted way, I am my biggest bully to myself. What does that mean? I think I’m the only one who has ever called me “fat” and “ugly” and “weird.” Except for that one frat guy, no one has called me those names before.

When I say self-love, I don’t mean it by flaunting and bragging about all of your qualities. Sure, strut the runway (read: or walk to class) but don’t be the “braggy” type. Lift yourself up. Be confident. Not cocky.

What are some practices of self-love?

I love it when I throw on an outfit and absolutely love it. I wanna “insta that shit” and dance on an elevated surface (read: my desk). And then there are times where I get an A on an exam and I just wanna throw my hands up in the air and have a dance party.

  1. Throw a dance party (bonus points if by yourself).
  2. Eat something sweet.
  3. Look at yourself in the mirror and smile to yourself.
  4. Put sticky notes on your mirror saying “I’m beautiful.”
  5. Set your phone wallpaper reminding that you’re great.

What motivates me?

Turning the tables really quickly to what motivates me. I think I’m the laziest one out of my friends and even my family — and that’s saying a lot because I grew up with two older brothers. So what motivates me then? Something that goes back to self-love: me. I motivate myself and will continue to persist because of the person I see in the mirror.

I push myself. I push myself to become better every day. I listen to podcasts that continue to motivate me. As Kylie Jenner once said, “this is the year of realizing stuff” well, that quote is so inspiring. I mean, Kylie did say it but like if you live by the fact that you can “realize stuff” every day, you can learn something new every day and honestly, that’s one of the greatest things anyone can accomplish.

I continue to find different things that motivate me each and every day. Whether it’s my dream of living in the south, my friends, or whether I get to watch an episode of Netflix. Maybe if you motivate yourself to finish your media and politics paper you can watch the new episode of The Bachelor.

How do I take care of myself?

I struggle. I stress over small and large things. I struggle with body image issues. I worry about the future. These worries fill my mind and take over everything that is making me happy in my life. How do I take care of this? How do I handle this anxiety, these worries that take over my life? I focus on myself. I constantly remind myself that I am my own person. This point goes back to self-love. A lot of the time when you’re feeling overwhelmed and anxious about anything and everything, the biggest thing that I do is sink into this “funk” where I don’t want to interact with people. I don’t want to hang out with my friends, don’t want to go out, and I skip out on my to-do list. How do I get out? By not letting me get in that funk. Easier said than done. I know. I get it. But just telling yourself not to get in that mindset over and over again — sooner or later, you’ll realize that the bad things you were fussing over were pointless and be blocking the good things in your life.
