how to be a morning person

AHH, I would never think in a million years that I would be a morning person. I mean, I’m a morning person with a cup and a half in me — but still, a morning person?! OK, truth be told, I’m only a “morning person” because I prefer to get things done in the morning.

unpopular opinion: I do not like sleeping in. When it’s 11 a.m and I’m just waking up, I just feel…unmotivated to do anything. When I came home from college, the first few days I let myself sleep in til’ noon. HOWEVER, that had to change. Every night, I set my alarm to 8 A.M. And yes, it’s the best way to accomplish my to-do list.

BUT if you have ever struggled with getting up in the morning for your job, class, or baby, then read these tips & try not to anger someone with your pre-coffee self.

1 Set your alarm the night before.

I set my alarm the night before. Tbh, I set multiple alarms so my lovely blaring alarm sound doesn’t let me sleep past 11. Most of the time, I usually hit snooze but I try not to hit it on the eleventh time my alarm blared.

2. Make a to-do list the night before.

OK, I suck at making to-do lists because partly I never have the time to go back and cross things off. However, as you climb into bed at a reasonable time at night, think over the things you have to do the next day. That way, you’ll set a mental note to yourself saying that you have to get up and be productive. This also helps with going to bed early, too.

3. Drink some coffee, girl.

Kk, this one is kinda obvious. If you’re not into coffee, you can basically skip this step — or make hot tea. If you love coffee, make this a part of your morning routine!! Your coffee maker is in the kitchen so the mere thought of coffee will get your ass out of bed in the morning. And sitting down with a coffee mug in hand and the TV remote in the other is ~ h e a v e n ~. It will almost make you want to be a morning person.

4. Accomplish your to-do list by doing the easiest thing first.

TBH, I like to get the easy things out of the way first because it gives me “confidence.” Hear me out, because I think this is actually good for people who aren’t typically morning people like myself. You’re exhausted, tired, and feel like the energy just got sucked out of you. Your brain hasn’t started working. If you do the easiest thing on your task list, maybe check your emails, your brain will not only start to wake up but tell you that you can move on to the next item on your list. Huh…what about that?! NGL, I’m finishing this post on a Monday morning with a cup of coffee next to me and my stomach grumbling. Can you tell what my to-do list looks like RN? Honestly, sometimes I question why I am a “morning person.”

5. Read a BOOK, MAGAZINE, OR THE BIBLE.

OK when I wake up in the morning, the FIRST thing I go to reach is my phone. I’ve tried to break this habit but the only thing that wakes me up without getting out of bed is the bright light of Twitter and Instagram (not even FB lol). What I will try to do is put my book right by my bed, sitting right next to my phone. That way, I can train my mind to pick up my book before my phone. Even if I read a couple of pages before I even glance at my phone is a good accomplishment.

  1. “Summer and the City” by Candace Bushnell (A Carrie Diaries novel)
  2. “Bridget Jones: the edge of reason” by Helen Fielding
  3. “Dirty Book Club” by Lisi Harrison

AND of course, what is better than reading the Bible? It will give you a hundred jolts of energy and you’ll start the day feeling empowered and amazing.

6. Eat some tasty pancakes.

Who said that breakfast was the most important meal of the day? Hate to admit it, but that person was right. Go out and get brunch! Stay in and make a bowl of delicious, mouth-watering cereal. Eat a protein bar. Food = important.

7. Plan out your day.

This coincides with making a to-do list the night before, but plan out your day! Don’t just make a list of what you have to do, but make a list of what you want to do. Set out and determine what you want to accomplish today. You’ll have a better understanding of what your goals are.
